Anti-age with LED (green tea anyone?)

How do you anti-age your skin, calm inflamed skin or treat acne? Chosen method: no pain, gain.  Well, LED or light therapy.

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is an extremely gentle yet effective treatment for many skin conditions. Our skin has the ability to absorb the energy given off by LED lights to stimulate cellular regeneration. Originally researched by NASA for their space program, LED (light emitting diode) rays were found to be able to repair the skin, stimulate production of collagen and elastic and help control visible ageing. This is because each colour wavelength of light has a specific and unique frequency vibration. Specific light wavelengths have a stimulatory action on the cells and so can be used to effectively normalize cellular imbalances and treat certain skin conditions.

The RED LED has a longer wavelength and is best for tired and ageing skin. It softens lines, accelerates skin healing and improves skin elasticity and plumpness.

The Blue LED has the shortest wavelength and is best used for skin blemishes, rosacea and acne as it repairs skin and is anti-inflammatory.

I use red and blue lights, either separately or together.  Studies have shown that concentrates or active botanicals placed on the skin are far more efficacious when used in conjunction with LED light.  Further studies have been done to show that a combination of green tea extract and LED gives faster results in softening lines than LEDs alone.   I always use an extract or gel with the LEDs, never LEDs alone.  I use green tea as well as my stock of many other concentrates, including hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E, omegas and some odd sounding ones like Butcher’s Broom and kiwi seed.

The only disadvantage of LED treatment, if you can call it that, is you don’t feel a current, you don’t have any buzzing or magnetic sensation. In essence, it’s as though nothing is happening other than the glow of the colour. But don’t under-estimate the power of this light. I use the LEDs within a facial for 10-15 minutes, depending on what is required, or if you specifically request it.
